Marika Hackman – 33
A children’s choir plays the voice in Marika Hackman’s head on “33”, a shadow figure telling her to keep going while she’s stuck between missing the past and dreading what comes next. The song covers the distance from 17 to her thirties in one stretch, and it gets the bittersweet balance right: “’33’ grapples with the dull ache of nostalgia, the apprehension of the future and the celebration of the moments in between,” she says. She wrote, produced and arranged it herself, and as on the rest of the album, she plays almost every instrument.
It opens “False Dogs”, her fifth album, out February 19 on Chrysalis Records, with a video by JOFI Films.
